Configuration — the dials
Orreth’s operating values are not scattered config files — they are dials: each one declared in firmware (name, type, bounds, what it governs, its blast radius, and the why that chose it) and valued on the governed shelf, where a human turns it through the console’s edit door. Every turn is a versioned record with lineage; an out-of-bounds turn is refused with the declaration’s own teaching; a value takes hold live within its declared horizon, no restart.
The table below is generated from the dial registry itself (the same declarations the machine enforces), so it cannot drift from the code. The default column is each dial’s genesis value — a fresh world’s starting word; on a running world the standing value lives on the shelf, and the console’s settings room shows it live with an ✎ door beside it.
Where a dial’s home says ladder, a floor may carry its own override on its own shelf, and the most specific word wins (subject → floor → universe). A home of universe means one value for the whole world, turned only at the universe’s own door.
| Dial | Governs | Default | Bounds | Home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| assay-ceiling tokens per UTC day | vera's independent-judge budget per day (0043 G5) blast: money and judgment — too low mutes the examiner, too high spends unwatched | 25000 | 0 – 1000000 | universe |
| assay-every seconds between beats | how often vera samples finished work at the assay dial (0043) blast: token spend against her declared ceiling | 300 | 30 – 604800 | universe |

| bell-cooldown seconds between rings | the least quiet between two rings of your REAL inbox — a repeat inside the window ages into the standing email (0044 law 6) blast: spam below, a silenced second alarm above — your inbox's peace either way | 3600 | 300 – 604800 | universe |
| bell-gate-age hours a card may wait | how long a consequential card may wait at your gate before the bell rings ONCE about it (0044 sp3) blast: nagging below, a forgotten gate above — and turning it DOWN on a rig with old cards standing rings the real inbox at once | 48 | 1 – 720 | universe |
| brain-census-every seconds between beats | how often the Brain's memory census refreshes blast: a stale gauge in the glass | 300 | 30 – 604800 | universe |
| cal-bar mean gap, 0..1 | the mean human-vs-examiner gap that becomes a card (news, never a lever — 0043 law 3) blast: noise below, a drifted examiner unreported above | 0.4 | 0 – 1 | universe |
| cal-every seconds between beats | how often calibration compares the human's thumbs to the examiner (0048) blast: a stale calibration gauge | 120 | 30 – 604800 | universe |
| cal-min-n overlapping pairs | the least human-vs-examiner pairs before calibration speaks at all (0048 sp4) blast: one thumb indicts vera below, calibration mute above | 5 | 1 – 100 | universe |

| fanout-budget-tokens tokens per fan-out | the DEFAULT thought budget an objective's fan-out divides among its seats when the ask names none (0047) blast: many seats × many tokens — the widest spend lever in one place | 2400 | 500 – 50000 | universe |
| fanout-min-share tokens floor per seat | the least any seat receives from a fan-out split blast: a starved seat mutes mid-thought | 60 | 10 – 2000 | universe |
| floor-capacity seats declared present | the floor's declared capacity — INFORMS the join gate's confession, never decides it: the human's word stays the door (0012, rule 3) blast: a false confession either way — the gate still asks | 20 | 1 – 500 | ladder |
| fuel-est-floor tokens one thought needs | the line under every lease: a remaining allowance below this cannot clear one typical governed thought and reads DRAINED, whatever dust remains blast: drains confessed too late below, false alarms above | 500 | 50 – 5000 | universe |
| improver-cycle-cap max_cycles ceiling | the ceiling the improver may nudge max_cycles toward — the machine tunes INSIDE this word, never over it (L3) blast: runaway self-tuning above, frozen self-improvement below | 5 | 1 – 10 | universe |
| improver-every seconds between beats | how often the improver reads the receipts (0028) blast: proposal storms when fast, a frozen engine when slow | 600 | 30 – 604800 | universe |
| improver-success-floor percent success | below this success rate the receipts earn the improver's nudge (0028) — at or above, healthy assets are left alone blast: proposal storms below a high bar, a frozen engine above a low one | 90 | 0 – 100 | universe |
| join-lease-days days a lease breathes | how long a join lease lives before re-join renews it — a lapsed lease is dormancy, never death (2026-08-20) blast: short churns renewals; long discovers dormancy late | 30 | 1 – 365 | universe |
| join-lease-tokens tokens of allowance per window | the fuel allowance a joining agent's lease carries per renew window (0058) blast: starves a mind mid-thought below, loosens the spend guard above | 50000 | 1000 – 2000000 | universe |
| kindrank request kind → rank, gravest first | which grievance reaches the human first in the one Inbox blast: attention — a wrong order buries the gravest card | an ordering of 22 kinds | — | universe |

| lease-renew-days days per allowance window | the fuel clause's window — the allowance refills every this-many days; 0 keeps the old lump posture (0058) blast: the vera-419 wound's family — a lump drains silently and nobody is told | 1 | 0 – 90 | universe |

| recall-days days of look-back | every governed retrieve's look-back window — how far into its own past the universe reaches when it recalls (sp0 named this constant once; this dial is the promise it carried) blast: too short silently starves recall and reports; too long grows every read — the performance disease's front door | 365 | 30 – 3650 | universe |

Two families of values are deliberately not dials, by the machine’s own razor: constitutional limits (a death’s abort margin, the witness floor) stay firmware — changing one is a release of the machine, not a setting — and a capability’s own numbers (a trading desk’s holding period) belong to that capability’s craft, never to the kernel’s drawer.
Environment variables seed a fresh world’s genesis values (the
ORRETH_* names in each declaration) and are demoted thereafter — the env
can start a value, never override a standing one.
