The panel

Open a world and the middle of the page is THE PANEL: the kernel drawn as a control room’s panel. It is not a dashboard of charts; it is a mimic panel of the machine — the kind a plant operator reads from across the room — and it is live. A quiet kernel is a dark, still panel.

  • Geometry is architecture. Every block sits where its declaration puts it and never moves: the six organs across the top, the crew’s stations in two rows (firmware and residents), the shelf’s tools beneath them, the running board and the tape below. An empty socket is a seat declared and not taken.
  • Light is operations. A fact on the feed lights a lamp or a rail segment toward whoever it is for, then fades. An ask lights the rail to a station; a tool hop lights the tool’s lamp; a lease lapsing lights the presence track red; a lever the kernel pulls lights the monitor and the intent track toward the body it acts on.
  • Colour is origin. Amber is a person’s word. Cyan is a body’s act. Violet is the kernel’s own. Red is a watch or a hold.

The panel knocks on no door by a clock: the roster, the stations and every lamp follow the feed — a body joining, refused, parked, its lease crossing the line.

Six organs the kernel always carries, always seated. A lamp lit jade means the organ is well. Click any organ and an inspector opens in place: what it is, its self, what it serves, and one-click doors into the chat, the crew, the monitor or the analyzer.

Organ Reads
DESK who is seated, who is at the door
GROUND the signed record; under it the pool of lines, the outbox’s age
GATEWAY the meter — what the world spent
SHELF every tool and service the kernel governs
MONITOR the watches, the health checks, the levers
ANALYZER everything born in the chat, by origin

A station is a crew seat. Solid means seated by its lease; dashed means declared, not seated; amber means the kernel parked it and will say why. Click a station for its inspector — its self, its lease, its life, what it is serving, what it has cost — and scope the chat here to speak to that body alone.

A lease lapsing lights the presence track red and the station goes dashed within five seconds; seated again, violet.

Every tool the crew may use, with a border that says how consequential it is: plain is routine, amber holds for your yes, red is grave. A lamp flashes cyan when a body reaches for one. Retire or restore a tool from its inspector; a retire holds at the interlock.

The running board is everything in flight as a tree: an INTENTION you stated, the OBJECTIVES the kernel filed under it, the THOUGHTS and ACTIONS the crew took to meet them. Every row is a door into the Analyzer. This is the part that grows when you let the kernel take the lead.

The tape is the same facts in words, newest first: who asked, who answered, how long it took, which lease lapsed, which lever the kernel pulled and why. If you read one line of the panel, read this one. The marker chips — structural · quality · resiliency — dim a group’s rows on the board and the tape.

The thin bar under the panel carries three soft switches — any combination, on one drawing:

  • ARCHITECTURE shows what is built, even the empty sockets and the tools.
  • OPERATIONS shows what is happening: the rails and the board.
  • PERFORMANCE lays the numbers over the same drawing: under each organ its doors’ p95 (how long the slowest one in twenty knocks took), under the GROUND the pool of lines (how many are busy, how many knocks wait for one), the outbox’s age, the spend, the benches’ depth, and THE DOORS row — every door this kernel answered in the last ten minutes, the slowest first, red past one second.

Beside them: FULL SCREEN (or press F) puts the panel alone on a wide display — the ceiling, the tabs and the floor fold away, the browser goes full screen too, and the drawing is scaled up to be read from across the room; Esc or F leaves it. TOUR opens the tour. CHAT, CREW, MONITOR and ANALYZER are the doors to the rest of the glass.

The ☀ / ☾ switch in the ceiling is the Daylight Glass: the same panel in daylight — paper, ink, bronze — or back to the night. Remembered in this browser; with nothing remembered, your system’s own preference decides. This book wears the same two palettes.

Under the nameplate, and on the sill in full screen, the panel whispers what it is looking at: the era (0.1.0), which kernel serves this door (rust or python), and when it was lit — read live from the health door.
